Are your gutters clogged or even missing?  It’s critical for your gutters do what they were designed to do and that is to channel water away from your home.  When was the last time you inspected your gutters?  Are they clogged, or have holes and sags?

If you leave your gutters and downspouts untended you might be surprised as to what is in them.  Gutters need to be cleaned out regularly because of the excess weight of leaves, twigs and standing water can make your gutter sag and pull away from your home.

You can clean out your gutters from a ladder yourself if your home is not too tall and if you don’t mind getting a little wet and dirty.  The best time to clean out your gutters would be after a big storm, falling of leaves or twigs, but as a general rule your gutters should be cleaned out twice a year.  After you clean up the muck, rinse your gutters with a garden hose; make sure they are flowing properly.

When inspecting your gutters, make sure the hardware attaching the gutter, which are called hangers, are secure to your home’s fascia.  If you find leaks and holes in your gutter you can seal them by caulking the joint or by patching it with metal flashing.  Make sure your gutters are pitched downward toward the downspouts for the water to flow properly.  If it’s not flowing properly, you will see standing water in your gutter.  Downspouts need to be extending several feet from your home or it will end up in your basement.  If you don’t even have gutters on your home consider investing in gutters to help protect your home.
